A. Yanatorn Premkamol, Advisor at the Center for Sports and Physical Fitness, Assumption University of Thailand (AU), was recently invited as a guest speaker at the National Coach Class 2 training for Pencak Silat. The event, organized by the Pencak Silat Association of Thailand, took place from August 1 to 7, 2024, at the Gymnasium of Chiang Mai Rajabhat University.
In an engaging morning session, A. Yanatorn shared invaluable insights into the importance of English in sports. His lecture emphasized the critical role of language proficiency for international travel and competition. He highlighted essential vocabulary and phrases for communicating with referees, coaches, players, and event officials.
A. Yanatorn’s interactive approach included practical exercises, where participants practiced short dialogues useful in various situations, such as competition registration, media interactions, and formal introductions. Trainees received direct feedback and practical advice, enhancing their confidence and communication skills.
This training not only boosted the participants' confidence in using English but also equipped them with essential communication skills for international sports competitions. A. Yanatorn shared his experiences and strategies for developing athletes to compete effectively on the global stage, inspiring the attendees to become high-quality coaches.
What is Pencak Silat?
Pencak Silat is a traditional martial art originating from Southeast Asia, particularly from Indonesia and Malaysia. It encompasses a wide range of fighting techniques, including strikes, joint manipulation, throws, and weaponry. Known for its fluid movements, complex footwork, and rhythmic patterns, Pencak Silat often resembles a dance when performed in demonstrations or competitions.
Key Characteristics of Pencak Silat
Techniques: Pencak Silat includes punches, kicks, sweeps, joint locks, and grappling, as well as the use of traditional weapons like knives, sticks, and machetes.
Cultural Significance: This martial art is deeply embedded in the cultural heritage of many Southeast Asian communities and is often performed during cultural events, celebrations, and ceremonies.
Spiritual Aspect: The practice of Pencak Silat incorporates spiritual and philosophical elements, reflecting the values and traditions of the cultures from which it originates.
Training and Competitions: Practitioners train in both solo and group forms, known as "jurus" and "sikap," respectively. Competitive Pencak Silat involves sparring matches where athletes score points based on their techniques and control.
Health and Fitness: Besides its combat applications, Pencak Silat is also practiced for physical fitness, mental discipline, and self-defense.
Pencak Silat Centers Across Thailand
The association has strategically located Pencak Silat centers in all four regions of Thailand:
Central Region: Samut Sakhon Province, Institute of Physical Education, Samut Sakhon Campus
Northeastern Region: Chaiyaphum Province, Physical Education Institute, Chaiyaphum Campus
Northern Region: Sukhothai Province, Physical Education Institute, Sukhothai Campus
Southern Region: Yala Province, Physical Education Institute, Yala Campus
These centers aim to instill a love for Pencak Silat in the local youth, nurturing their skills and creating a strong foundation for the sport's growth and development. Through these efforts, the Pencak Silat Association aspires to cultivate a new generation of athletes who will proudly represent Thailand on the international stage.
