The Bernadette de Lourdes School of Nursing Science (BLNS) at Assumption University of Thailand (AU) continues its commitment to academic service by addressing a critical community need—venomous snake awareness.

After a community assessment near the Manarotul-Uloom Foundation, it was found that both children and adults faced dangers from venomous snake encounters. In response, Dr. Pimsiri Bhusiri, Dr. Chavalee Boonto, Dr. Prapawan Praevanich, and Dr. Naree Achwarin conducted a health education session for 30 students at the foundation, equipping them with essential knowledge on snakebite prevention and management.

The session covered the effects of different snake venoms:

  • Hemotoxins, which cause bleeding and coagulation disorders (e.g., Green pit viper, Russell’s viper, Malayan pit viper).
  • Neurotoxins, which lead to muscle weakness, paralysis, and coordination problems (e.g., cobra, king cobra, Malayan krait, Banded krait).
  • Myotoxins, which result in muscle destruction and severe pain (e.g., sea snakes).

Participants learned how to identify venomous snakes, recognize symptoms of envenomation, and respond effectively in the event of a bite. Through initiatives like this, BLNS reinforces its mission to provide impactful, community-driven education that saves lives—one lesson at a time.
