A Morning of Craftsmanship: DIY Krathong Workshop at AU Plaza
The festivities began early with a hands-on Krathong-making workshop held at AU Plaza in the CL Building. From 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., participants created their own Krathongs—small, decorative floats made from banana leaves, flowers, and candles. This activity allowed students, faculty, and international guests to connect with Thai tradition on a personal level, crafting floats that would later be released on the water, symbolizing the letting go of negativity and the hope for new beginnings.

Setting the Stage: A Grand Procession and Warm Welcome
At 4:30 p.m., the ceremonial session began with a registration period, followed by a lively procession of Thai traditional drum performers who led AU administrators to the main stage. The rhythmic beats and vibrant procession created an atmosphere of festivity, drawing the attention of the crowd gathered near the Thai Pavilion. By 5 p.m., the Master of Ceremonies took to the stage, officially welcoming attendees and setting the tone for the evening.

Opening Remarks: Preserving Culture and Unity
Following a brief introduction, Ms. Monnapa Boonyaviroj, the Project Director, delivered a heartfelt speech on the significance of the Loy Krathong event. She emphasized the importance of preserving Thai culture within the AU community and fostering cultural exchange between Thai and international students. At 5:20 p.m., Rev. Bro. Dr. Monthol Prathumarach, Vice President for Special Affairs, his message highlighted AU’s commitment to honoring cultural heritage.

A Showcase of Thai Culture: Traditional Games and Performances
The evening continued with a showcase of Thai traditional games, filling the area with laughter and enthusiasm as attendees participated in the spirited activities. At 6 p.m., a Thai Classical Dance and Music Group took the stage, captivating the audience with graceful movements and harmonious sounds.
An Unexpected Twist: AU Security Officers Take the Stage
Adding an element of surprise, AU’s Security Officers performed a lively routine at 6:20 p.m., bringing unexpected energy and laughter to the celebration. Their performance delighted the crowd, showing a different side of the security team as they joined in the cultural festivities. The security officers’ act was met with cheers and applause, making it one of the evening’s highlights and reinforcing the sense of community and camaraderie that defined the event.

The Heart of the Ceremony: Krathong Floating on the Water
At 6:30 p.m., attendees gathered by the water for the evening’s highlight—the Krathong Floating. Each person carefully placed their handmade Krathong onto the water, candles flickering as the floats drifted away. This moment of quiet reflection, with hundreds of tiny lights glowing across the lake, offered a collective pause for the AU community. The Krathongs carried not only tradition but also personal wishes for peace, happiness, and renewal.

Music and Movies: A Night of Community Under the Stars
Following the floating ceremony, a mini concert at 6:45 p.m. lifted spirits with lively music, inviting everyone to relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere. As night fell, an outdoor movie screening began at 7:15 p.m., providing a cozy setting under the stars where students, faculty, and guests could unwind and savor the close of a memorable evening. The program concluded at 9 p.m., leaving attendees with a sense of unity and cultural pride.

A Celebration of Culture, Connection, and Reflection
AU Loy Krathong 2024 was more than a festival; it was a moment of connection and reflection for Assumption University’s diverse community. Through events like these, AU builds a bridge between cultures, offering its members a space to honor tradition, embrace diversity, and celebrate together. The flickering lights on the water were a reminder that even in an increasingly globalized world, traditions continue to unite us in meaningful ways.
