On December 12, 2024, the Bernadette de Lourdes School of Nursing Science (BLNS) at Assumption University of Thailand (AU) hosted its Wai Kru ceremony at De Montfort Hall, Hua Mak Campus. The event, held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, brought together students, faculty, and guests to celebrate a cherished Thai tradition.
Wai Kru, which means “Paying Respect to Teachers,” is a centuries-old ritual where students honor their teachers with symbolic offerings like candles, incense, and flowers. It reflects Thailand’s deep cultural values of gratitude, respect, and learning. At AU, Wai Kru has become a meaningful annual tradition that strengthens the bond between students and teachers.

On this occasion, Dr. Phat Prapawichar, Dean of BLNS; Asst. Prof. Dr. Onouma Thammpol, Associate Dean; and the school’s nursing instructors played a central role in the ceremony. They guided the students through the meaningful rituals, accepting their offerings and sharing heartfelt blessings and encouragement.
The ceremony began with a grand procession led by students carrying beautifully arranged offerings. The atmosphere in the auditorium was serene, with traditional Thai decorations adding to the sense of occasion. A candle-lighting ritual symbolized the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment.
Dr. Phat gave an inspiring speech, emphasizing the important role of teachers in shaping the next generation of nurses. “Wai Kru reminds us of the respect and gratitude at the heart of education,” she said.

Students knelt before their teachers, offering a wai—a gesture of deep respect—while the faculty gave blessings and words of encouragement. The emotional moment highlighted the shared commitment to learning and growth.
The ceremony ended with a prayer for the success and well-being of students and teachers, bringing everyone together in a spirit of unity and purpose.
Through this heartfelt event, BLNS celebrated the values of respect, gratitude, and community while preparing its students for a future of compassionate service.
