Russia National Day

Russia National Day, 12 June

Russia

Russia Day (День России Den Rossii) National Day, celebrated on June 12. On this day, in 1991, Russian parliament formally declared Russian sovereignty from the Soviet Union. The holiday was officially established in 1992. Initially it was named Day of the Adoption of the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation, on 1 February 2002 it was officially renamed to Russia Day (in 1998 Boris Yeltsin offered this name socially).

In Russian society there is a misconception that this holiday is also called "Russia's Independence Day", but it never has had such a name in official documents. According to a survey by Levada Center in May 2009, 44% of respondents named the holiday as "Independence Day of Russia."

History

Epic is the only word for Russia's history, which within the last century alone has packed in an indecent amount of world- shaking events and spawned larger-than-life characters from Rasputin to Boris Yelsin. Even now, over a decade since the end of the Soviet Union is still in flux as long-secret documents come to light and then, just as mysteriously, become classified again. What is clear is that from its very beginnings Russia has been a multiethnic country, its in inhabitants a colorful and exhausting list of native peoples and invaders. The descendants of whom are still around today.

Philippines Independence Day

Philippines Independence Day, 12 June

Philippines

Independence Day (Filipino: Araw ng Kasarinlán; also known as Araw ng Kalayaan, "Day of Freedom") is an annual national holiday in the Philippines observed on June 12, commemorating the declaration of Philippine independence from Spain in 1898.

History

Way, Way Back Thanks to ‘Tabon Man', who left a bit of his (or her, according to some) skull in a cave in Palawan at least 22,000 years ago, a sliver of light shines into the deep, dark prehistory of the Philippines. The oldest known human relic of the islands, this bone suggests that the Tabon Caves helped early Homo sapiens survive the last ice age.

Later generations left behind tools and terracotta jars, including the 3000-year-old Manunggul burial jar. Hailed as a masterpiece of ancient pottery, the jar depicts two people paddling a boat into the afterlife. To this day, the ocean and the boat remain powerful symbols in the Philippines. Even the word barangay, meaning a community or the basic Filipino social unit, is derived from the ancient balangay, or sailboat.
