On June 29, Assumption University of Thailand (AU) and the Catholic community joyfully celebrates the Feast Day of Saints Peter and Paul. As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of honoring these two pillars of the Church on the same day. Together, Saint Peter and Saint Paul are recognized as the founders of the See of Rome, established through their preaching, ministry, and martyrdom. The Holy See also called the See of Rome is the jurisdiction of the pope in his role as the Bishop of Rome.

Saint Peter: The Rock of the Church

Peter, originally named Simon, was a fisherman from Galilee introduced to Jesus by his brother Andrew. Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Petrus in Latin), meaning 'Rock,' as he was destined to become the foundational rock upon which Christ would build His Church. Peter was the first to acknowledge Jesus as “the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” and pledged his unwavering fidelity to Him.

Despite his boldness, Peter's humanity often led to mistakes, such as losing faith while walking on water and denying Jesus on the night of His passion. Nevertheless, Peter was chosen to shepherd God's flock. The Acts of the Apostles depicts his crucial role as the head of the Church after Christ's Resurrection and Ascension. As the first Pope, Peter led the Apostles and safeguarded the true faith.

Peter spent his final years in Rome, guiding the Church through persecution until his martyrdom in 64 AD. He was crucified upside-down at his own request, feeling unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. Saint Peter's Basilica now stands over his burial site on Vatican Hill.

Saint Paul: The Apostle to the Gentiles

Saint Paul, formerly known as Saul, was a Jewish Pharisee who ardently persecuted Christians. He witnessed the martyrdom of Saint Stephen and was en route to Damascus to continue his persecution when a divine encounter changed his life. Surrounded by a heavenly light, Saul was blinded and fell from his horse, hearing the voice of Jesus asking, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” After this profound experience, Saul converted, was baptized in Damascus, regained his sight, and took the name Paul.

Saint Paul dedicated the rest of his life to preaching the Gospel to the Gentiles across the Mediterranean. His letters, which form a significant portion of the New Testament, offer deep insights into his life and the faith of the early Church. Paul was eventually imprisoned and taken to Rome, where he was beheaded in 67 AD. He is buried at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.

A Unique Tribute at Assumption University of Thailand

Assumption University of Thailand is proud to be one of the few Catholic universities to house replica statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. These statues are inspired by the originals at St. Paul Outside the Walls Cathedral, honoring the immense contributions of these saints to the Catholic Church and enriching the spiritual environment of our campus.

Rev. Bro. Bancha Saenghiran, President of AU, shares, "The legacy of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a testament to the enduring strength and spread of the Catholic faith. Their lives inspire us to live with courage and dedication, spreading hope, faith, and truth in our community."
