Assumption University of Thailand (AU) proudly hosted an electrifying lecture by the world-renowned architect and designer Bill Bensley on February 20, 2025, as part of the 2024 Lecture Series organized by the Montfort del Rosario School of Architecture and Design. The event captivated an audience of students, faculty, and design enthusiasts eager to hear from the visionary behind some of the world’s most breathtaking and sustainable hospitality projects.

Often hailed as the "Willy Wonka of hotel design," Bensley brought his signature energy, wit, and passion for sustainability to the stage. He shared insights from his extraordinary career, which spanned over three decades and more than 200 projects in 50 countries. His talk focused on his unique approach to design, which seamlessly blended architecture, landscape, and interior design to create spaces that honored both nature and local culture.
Bensley’s lecture transported the audience into the heart of his most celebrated projects. He recounted the inspiration behind the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Thailand, where luxury meets elephant conservation, and the acclaimed Shinta Mani Wild in Cambodia, which funds wildlife and forest preservation efforts. He also highlighted his work on the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort in Vietnam, a stunning fusion of contemporary luxury and Vietnamese heritage.

Born in California in 1959, Bensley traced his design journey back to a fateful career day talk that introduced him to the world of landscape architecture. He went on to study at California State Polytechnic University and later earned a full scholarship to Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. His travels through Asia led him to establish his design studios in Bangkok and Bali, where he built an international reputation for pushing the boundaries of design and environmental responsibility.
Beyond architecture, Bensley’s commitment to conservation and philanthropy played a central role in his lecture. He discussed his Shinta Mani Foundation, which has provided education and resources to underprivileged communities, and his groundbreaking Sensible Sustainable Solutions initiative, a white paper advocating for eco-conscious design practices.
The event left attendees inspired and energized, with students and faculty engaging in a lively Q&A session after the talk. Many expressed admiration for Bensley’s ability to combine creativity, storytelling, and sustainability into a powerful design philosophy.
AU was honored to welcome Bill Bensley, a true trailblazer in the world of architecture and hospitality. His visit underscored the university’s commitment to fostering sustainability, innovation, and global perspectives in design education.
