Thailand commemorates Khao Phansa Day or Vassa, the start of a three-month commitment known as the Buddhist Rains Retreat on Tuesday, July 21st, 2024. This period marks a significant time for Buddhists, as monks seclude themselves in temples for three months of intense spiritual practice, and lay Buddhists recommit to their religious precepts.

Known internationally as Buddhist Lent or the Buddhist Rains Retreat, this tradition dates back to the time of Lord Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (6th century BCE). It provides monks with a period of solitude and spiritual dedication, a practice that has parallels in other major religions such as Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism.

Buddhist Rains Retreat in Thailand
In Thailand, the Buddhist Rains Retreat features two significant rituals: the Candle Procession and the Offering of the Rain-Bathing Cloth. The Candle Procession involves intricate wax carvings displayed in elaborate float parades, showcasing traditional craftsmanship. The Offering of the Rain-Bathing Cloth is a symbolic act of support for monks, tracing its origins back to the time of Lord Buddha.

Monks engage in early morning and evening prayers during the retreat, with Buddhist Thais lighting candles to aid their monastic studies. The Candle Procession has evolved into a grand celebration, featuring float-sized wax carvings in an awe-inspiring display of artistry.

Vassa Around the World
The significance of Vassa extends beyond Thailand to Theravada Buddhist nations like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. Each country has unique ways of observing Vassa. For instance, Myanmar marks the end of Vassa with the Thadingyut Festival, and Sri Lanka observes it the day after Esala Poya Day, with provisions for a "Late Vassa."

Khao Phansa is a time for spiritual reflection and renewal, not only for monks but for the entire Buddhist community. It is a period to deepen one’s faith, engage in acts of merit, and find inner peace.
